Letter from the Principal
September 26, 2008
Dear Parents and Students:
Greetings! It is hard to believe that we have completed our sixth week of school! We continue to be focused with assessing our students’ abilities in reading, writing, and mathematics along with getting to know our current and new students to Beach Court. Our Grades 2 - 5 students just completed the Benchmark Assessments last week. With this information, we will be able to better plan for instruction and impact student learning. Within this month, students are continuing to learn about the Beach Court Expectations and the theme of Respect. Please continue speaking to your child about his/her reading, writing, and mathematics learned everyday at school!!!
Denver Public Schools Pupil Count Day – Wednesday, October 1
On Wednesday, October 1, Denver Public Schools will actively count all of our Beach Court students attending school on this particular day. This information will be used to determine our human and monetary resources for the 2009 – 2010 school year. Please make sure you send your child to school on Wednesday to be counted for the Pupil Count. Thank you very much for your help with this matter!!!
Nightly Homework
Students at ALL grade levels are responsible for completing homework nightly. Please check with your child and ensure that he/she completes and turns in all homework assignments for the following day. Sending your child with completed homework assignments will enable your child to achieve greater academic success!
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on October 27 and 28 from 4:00 – 8:00 p. m.. There will be no classes held on October 29. Your child’s teacher will be sending home a note on Friday, October 3 for you to select your preferred date(s) and time(s) for the conferences. During the conference, your child’s teacher will discuss your child’s progress in all content areas along with strategies for you to use at home to improve student learning.
Million Word Campaign
Has your child been reading nightly? Have you been sending in the forms to your child’s teacher indicating what your child has read? Do you ask questions about what your child is reading? If the answer is YES to all the questions, your child is heading in the right direction with reaching the goal of reading 1, 000, 000 words for the school year. Some sample questions to ask your child nightly might be:
Who is the main character in the story?
What do you predict he/she will do in this story?
How does this book relate to you?
How does this book relate to other books you have read?
How does this book relate to the world around you?
What is the main idea of the story?
If you could rewrite any part of the book, how would you
rewrite it? Why?
The 250, 000 Word Assembly will take place on Tuesday, October 28 throughout the day to recognize those students who have read 250, 000 words since August.

School Performance Framework Report (SPF) 2008
A special congratulations goes to Beach Court as we received a “Meets Expectations” rating and an “Average” rating on the SPF report recently published by Denver Public Schools. The report indicates that we need to improve on our CSAP proficiency rate in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, and Science as well as improving our attendance rate. With your ongoing support in these specific areas, I am confident that our school will continue our excellent reputation on improving student learning for all students.
